Torna Fort: Where a 16-Year-Old Started an Empire
It takes an extraordinary young man to look at a mountaintop and think: I'll take that. Shivaji Maharaj was 16. And he took it.

Torna Fort — also called Prachandagad (the Fierce Fort) — holds a unique place in Maratha history: it was Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's first military conquest, captured from the Adilshahi Sultanate in 1643 when he was just 16 years old.
At 1,403 metres, it is the highest fort in the Pune district and one of the highest in Maharashtra. Its capture was not just strategic — it was the declaration of an intention that would reshape the Deccan.
The Trek
The most common route starts from Velhe village in Velhe Taluka. The ascent is challenging — over 3 hours of continuous uphill climbing through dense shola forest and rocky faces. The final approach involves a steep scramble that rewards with dramatically vertical views.
The summit plateau contains ruins of a Menghai Devi temple, multiple cisterns filled with rainwater, and the remains of the Bini Darwaja (main entrance gate).
The History
When Shivaji captured Torna, he found a large treasure cache within the fort. He used this gold to fund the building of a new fort — Rajgad — visible from Torna's summit. The two forts, separated by a high Sahyadri ridge, are often paired as a multi-day expedition.
"Every empire needs a beginning. Torna was Shivaji's."
Torna is not a comfortable climb. But standing at 1,403 metres, looking out over the same valley a teenage Shivaji surveyed with his army, discomfort seems beside the point.
