Pune International Marathon: The City That Runs
Before sunrise. 26.2 miles. Tens of thousands of feet on roads cleared specially for them. The Pune marathon is more than a race — it is an annual declaration of who this city is.
Category: Sports | Distance: Full, Half, 10K | Season: January
The Pune International Marathon is held annually in January and draws some 30,000–40,000 participants ranging from elite African runners to corporate teams and weekend warriors. It routes through Pune's most scenic roads — past Shivajinagar, the University campus, and Baner — giving runners and spectators alike a moving experience of the city.
Pune's Running Culture
The marathon reflects something broader: Pune is a running city. Morning runs along Pune's many lakes and university avenues, evening runs on Baner Road, weekend long runs to Sinhagad base — the culture of recreational running has exploded in the city over the past decade.
Running clubs including Pune Road Runners and Deccan Cliffhangers organise weekly group runs, training programmes, and coordinate the community that feeds the marathon every year.
The Balewadi Sports Complex
The marathon typically starts and finishes at the Shri Shivchhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi — the sprawling facility built for the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games. The complex includes Olympic-standard athletics tracks, swimming pools, and courts that host training programmes year-round.
The Pune Marathon is not just a race. It is a moving reminder that this city, for all its modernity, still puts one foot in front of the other — and covers remarkable distances.
