FC Pune City and Football's Roots in the Deccan
Punch a ball. Watch it bounce off basalt. Kick it back up the hill. That is how Pune played football — and somehow, it found its way to the Indian Super League.

FC Pune City competed in the Indian Super League (ISL) from its inaugural season in 2014 through to 2018-19 — a period that generated genuine football passion in a city that had previously been associated almost exclusively with cricket and motorsport.
The club's home ground, Shri Shivchhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi, became a vibrant venue for ISL matches, drawing fervently partisan crowds.
The FC Pune City Years
FC Pune City brought international-quality football to Pune, with marquee signings including Diego Forlán (Uruguayan World Cup Golden Ball winner) in 2016-17. The arrival of a global superstar ignited city-wide enthusiasm.
The club reached the ISL Semi-finals in 2016-17 before being eliminated. The franchise was disbanded after 2018-19 due to financial issues — one of ISL's larger losses at the time.
Pune FC and the I-League Legacy
Before ISL, Pune was represented by Pune FC in the I-League from 2007-12. The club developed a loyal grassroots following and produced several players who went on to national prominence.
The Pune City FC grassroots football programme continues as a community initiative maintaining football culture in schools and colleges across the city.
Football in Pune has known abandonment before. But its community — the coaches, the youth players, the die-hard fans — are still there, waiting for the next chapter.
