Savitribai Phule Pune University: The Oxford of the East
411 acres of heritage buildings, research laboratories, towering trees, and young minds — the campus that gave Pune its most enduring identity.

When people call Pune the "Oxford of the East", the comparison begins here, at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). Founded in 1949 and named after India's first female teacher, the university spans 411 acres in the northwestern corner of the city — a verdant, surprisingly tranquil oasis of academic ambition.
A University City Within a City
The SPPU campus is, functionally, a small city. It has residential areas for faculty and staff, a post office, a hospital, a nursery school, a boating lake, and cycle paths through forested sections that feel entirely unlike urban Pune.
The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) — a globally recognised research institute — is located within the campus grounds. Walking its promenade at dusk, with peacocks calling from the trees, feels surreal.
The Architecture
Several of the university's buildings are genuine architectural masterpieces. The Rajabai Tower-inspired main building and the older departments draw students and visitors with their colonial-era arched corridors and lawns. The newer science blocks are functional modernism — but the campus paths connecting them, shaded by old trees, are the defining experience.
The Legacy of 800+ Colleges
SPPU is affiliated with over 800 colleges spread across Pune, Nashik, Ahmednagar, and Kolhapur districts — representing approximately 700,000 students in total. Its research output in science, humanities, and social sciences ranks among the highest of any Indian university outside the IIT/IISc system.
On a late afternoon in October, cycling through the SPPU campus as peafowl cross the path before you, it is impossible not to understand why this city fell in love with learning.
