Bajaj Auto: The Two Wheels That Moved India
The Chetak scooter was not just a vehicle. It was a promotions, a wedding procession, a school run, a life. And it was made in Pune.

Bajaj Auto was founded in 1945 by Jamnalal Bajaj as a trading company before pivoting entirely to two-wheeler manufacturing. For over seven decades, its plant in Akurdi, Pimpri-Chinchwad has been among the most productive automobile manufacturing facilities in India — and at points, in the world.
The Chetak: India's Scooter
The Bajaj Chetak — introduced in 1972 — is the most culturally significant vehicle in Indian automotive history. It was the scooter that India's expanding middle class acquired (often after a multi-year wait list) as their first motorised vehicle.
Named after the legendary horse of Maharana Pratap, the Chetak became embedded in family rituals across India — used for school runs, medical emergencies, market trips, and the dignified daily commute of a country asserting its modernity. It was reborn in 2020 as an electric scooter — the Bajaj Chetak EV.
The Pulsar Revolution
In 2001, Bajaj launched the Pulsar — a motorcycle aimed at young India that prioritised style, performance, and identity over pure utility. It redefined the Indian motorcycle market and remains one of India's best-selling motorcycles. The Pulsar was designed in Pune and has been iterated continuously from the Akurdi and Chakan plants.
Bajaj's scooters drove India's independence — not from the British, but from immobility. That is not a small thing.
